DARTFORD 3 HORNCHURCH 3 Simon Parker came into the starting line up in place of Kris Lee, who was out with an injury. Dartford started strongly, when McDonald made a powerful run down the middle, holding off the challenge from Mark Goodfellow, and then screwing his shot wide of the goal as John Purdie came in quickly. Hornchurch had an early chance of their own, when Mark Janney found Donny Barnard overlapping, and then took the return pass and crossed high into the middle, where Powell headed away from Dean Green. The ball was played back up field and McDonald placed it right in front of Haworth, who ran clear and was pulled back for offside. From the indirect free kick Donny Barnard sent over a high ball for Simon Parker to head on to Elliot Styles, who hit a first time drive which Young tipped around the post at full stretch. Andy Tomlinson’s corner was cleared by Flanagan. McDonald looked dangerous when he raced through the middle from inside his own half, and his shot went just over the bar. With play swinging back and forth, it was Hornchurch who went ahead when Parker won the ball on the half way line, and sent a long cross field pass to Mark Janney, who made ground and centred, for SIMON PARKER to touch the ball into the net. And four minutes later it was two up when Tomlinson’s long pass found Parker, who twisted and turned past two defenders and centred, for DEAN GREEN to rise majestically to head home. Dartford could have pulled one back when Haworth found himself clear, and John Purdie came across quickly to intercept. Back to the other end, and Parker picked out Janney, whose cross was well saved by Young. Frank Curley was harshly penalised for what looked like a perfectly fair tackle, and White’s free kick from just ten yards outside the area went low past the wall, and also a good way wide of the post. A chance went begging when Lee Brown sent a free kick across the goal mouth and no one could get a touch, whilst Noble’s speculative long range shot went high over the Hornchurch bar. Noble was fortunate to remain on the field after a very late challenge on John Purdie, who needed lengthy treatment. Dartford came forward and a long throw from Powell found Dafter who directed his header accurately but Dale Brightly saved comfortably. Urchins almost added a third goal when Lee Brown won a midfield header to send Dean Green away, Dean’s shot cum cross going across goal and out of play. Lee Brown was harshly booked after seemingly winning the ball fro, Powell who had run on to Noble’s pass, and Day’s free kick went out for a corner. Urchins went three up when Frank Curley intercepted the ball in midfield and his long pass to Mark Janney opened up the right flank. Janney played the ball over and DEAN GREEN came in late to turn the ball into the net. Dartford almost pulled a goal back close to the interval when Haworth again broke clear, and again Purdie came across to intercept. A strong wind sprung up at the interval, which helped the home side, who were playing with the wind in their favour They quickly pulled a goal back when CODIE McDONALD made a solo run through the middle and fired the ball home. Dartford stormed forward, and McDonald hit a shot wide when he ran on to Powell’s long throw. It was McDonald again a minute later when he ran clear from the half way line, and Dale Brightly raced outside his area to kick clear. McDonald then hit in a shot from the edge of the area which Brightly tipped around the post, and Dale then punched clear from the corner. Hornchurch, having difficulty in playing against the increasing wind, almost scored when Parker won the ball in midfield, and touched on to Curley, who in turn found Tomlinson, who then sent Lee Brown in from the left. Brown cut inside and his cross was just too far ahead of Parker and Green, who could not get the touch that was needed to put it into the net. A Day free kick deflected out for a corner, and Goodfellow headed out for a second corner, and then Purdie cleared to concede a third corner in succession, from which McDonald headed over. With Dartford coping well with the conditions a long range shot from White hit the bar and went over. Another corner, on the left, saw Brown play the ball out for a corner on the right, which was only partly cleared to Powell, who turned the ball inside to ROB HAWORTH, who scored with a shot from outside the area. Two minutes later and Dartford were level, when Powell passed to Flanagan, who sent the ball on to JAMIE DAY, who scored with a spectacular volley from thirty yards out. Urchins at last found some rhythm and Parker’s cross was played out by Osborne, with Brown’s throw being headed away by Coyle. A good move started when Barnard found Parker, who then sent Janney away on the right, and Mark’s cross was turned out for a corner, which Tomlinson took, and Flanagan cleared. Barnard again, this time with a direct up field pass to Janney, and Janney rounded Powell but was tackled by Osborne for another corner, which Tomlinson took and Raphael Sylvester just failed to reach. Lee Hodges came on for Frank Curley and was promptly fouled by Dafter who was booked. Hodges took the free kick and played the ball short to Janney who picked out Tomlinson on the other side of the field, but Andy’s cross was headed away by Coyle. Dartford managed a scoring opportunity of their own when Coyle cross for McDonald whose header was well saved by Brightly. Jim McFarlane came on for the last three minutes, but Urchins could not get through the home defence. McDonald was very fortunate to be allowed to remain on the field when Elliot Styles was injured in a tackle, and McDonald twice appeared to attempt to haul Elliot to his feet, and then appeared became involved with two other players as Elliot lay on the ground. A red card was the only possible decision for the referee, who instead weakly waved a yellow, and was then called over by the linesman, but took no further action, other than to blow the whistle for full time, with the sleet now falling heavily. One point won? No, two points lost, in a match where in the first half Urchins played some of their best football of the season. |
